Twitter for CPL 2.0

Since I have a very short attention span, I liked Twitter! More seriously, it was great to get the short version of info through CPL tweets. Less may be more in this overloaded information age. On the other hand, when I looked at other sites about movies, they were not very helpful or interesting but mightbe good for friends / family who want to stay connected all the time through their phones or whatever. Face Book seems more visually interesting.

LibraryThing... I'm in love! ... cpl web 2.0

omg the Library Thing is a beautiful thing! I can see so many uses. Customers who are hooked on fiction and especially book clubbers will love it. I can hardly wait to tell two of my Ontario sisters about the Library Thing. We swap book ideas. They often tell me about books I absolutely MUST read... we have a weird, casual, sort of telephone book club going. They will be SO impressed with the Library Thing for book ideas, reviews etc etc. I haven't checked Library Thing for Canadian content yet. My next project. I hope it does a good job of Canadian authors too.

Google Docs and Calendar for cpl web 2.0

I've used Google's version of Word. It was fine for most things but when I needed to update my resume and make it look as good as possible, I found some limitations. We ended up buying MS Word for those times when we want everything to be as good as it gets.
Today I tried the Google Calendar. I'm glad to have tried this out! I added my next haircut and dental app't. I'm notified about these events by my salon already and have found it great, preferable to a phone message. I changed notification times to 3 days before next app't (rather than 10 minutes). Glad to have figured out how to do this too.
An interesting experiment and addition to my paper month-at-a-glance that I expect to continue to be attached to.

Flickr and You Tube for CPL web 2.0

Both seem very user friendly and very entertaining. The library commercials and Dramatic Chipmunk were fun on YouTube. I've encountered YouTube when googling for a book review. Fun way to get another 'take' on a novel. Wonderful way to get info of all sorts actually, whether it's something funny, a recipe or more serious pursuit. YouTube can be a great beginning.
Glad to have look at Flickr too and hear about how other people use it. A fellow staff member has used it for classes that he teaches, for illustrating a point with a photo. I may end up exploring Flickr further as the need arises. I looked up photos of the Bruce Peninsula (were I grew up). Gorgeous photos. Great way to have a mini holiday without spending any money!
Amazing world of information at our finger tips. To state the obvious, and as 'Did you know 4.0' illustrates, the world has changed.

really simple! cpl 2.0

It's great to actually do this assignment since it worried me... it did not SOUND simple. I can certainly see the usefulness. For example I am addicted to HGTV. I will now be able to stay up-to-date with new programs and highlights of HGTV using 2 different RSS feeds. I notice when I google an area of interest such as CBC (or HGTV) and add the words "RSS feeds", they all pop up. Cool to find out that this process is very doable and quick. I also notice when I read the posts of other blogs I'm following that many library staff stay in touch with new developments in the library world through RSS feeds. What a great tool, no matter what industry a person is part of. Thanks for this interesting assignment. P.S. Continuing to have lots of fun on Face Book! I had no idea what I was missing!

Googling for CPL web 2.0

Like many of the Fish Creek Staff who I am "following", I've had previous experience with parts of Google such as Chrome, gmail, and images. Friends have also proudly displayed their knowledge and know-how of Google Earth and maps... This assignment encouraged me to download Google Earth for myself and do a little exploration of maps. The maps I checked quickly demonstrated the product's strengths and limitations by looking for specific addresses in the city. Great for city addresses, not quite as helpful for rural and small town locations... no pictures! Still, useful for getting from here to there.
The world is beginning to feel smaller with ALL this information at my fingertips. Last week's experience with Face Book also made the world feel smaller since I connected with friends I haven't talked to in decades. Amazing.

Face Book

Although I used another social networking site years ago, I was not in a big hurry to sign up for Face Book. Maybe I didn't think I would find it necessary or useful. On the other hand, occasionally someone has said "look at my facebook account to see my recent photos etc"... I never could. Now that I've taken the plunge, I'll be able to see everyone's latest holiday adventures and upload a few of my own (maybe)! Also it might be fun to be in touch with old friends. It was kind of fun signing up today. I wonder how Face Book can possibly know who my friends might be the minute I get an account? That was spooky and interesting! For now I'll leave my privacy settings wide open since there is nothing particularly private about my account. On the other hand, CPL friends who are Face Book veterans may tell me why I should be more careful. I'll check that out soon.

Wikipedia... Memories of childhood and cpl web 2.0

What a feeling of power... very short-lived no doubt. I went to the page about my home town of Wiarton. Under 'things to do' I added the suggestion to go swimming off the town dock, especially in August and September when the water is lovely and warm. The content of the article was great... before I added my little memory piece!
The original article in Wikipedia was not too long, but contained most important information about the town and it's beginnings. Grammar and spelling perfect!

Delicious web 2.0 (2nd assignment)

The advantages of Delicious for CPL's "Best Websites" are very clear. Best Websites are an important part of information service at the library. We wouldn't want to be without the ability to bookmark and share useful / great web resources with our customers. Has Delicious improved recently?... or maybe I've improved! I found it easier to navigate and get to my favourites with this assignment. Delicious seemed confusing at first... when we first started using it. This assignment was a great reminder of all those lovely gems available for tough (and not so tough) info questions.

What I hope to learn

Finding my way in a 2.0 world... I'm glad I'm being 'encouraged' to learn :). After all, there is no escape! And I really don't want escape anyway... I'm wondering about Flickr and Twitter. Lovely words to live by!
